STAR
WARS: MILLENNIUM FALCON
Author: James Luceno
THE REVIEW
If you're
a Stephen King fan, the beginning of Millennium Falcon may seem a
tad familiar to you. Although the Falcon does not kill anyone coming
off the assembly line, she definitely shows a mind of her own and a
willingness to escape the bonds that held her.
This theme of the ship having her own mind recurs
throughout the book as Han Solo traces the Falcon's ownership
backwards. Unknown to him, a former owner is trying to recover a
treasure from the Falcon by following ownership of the ship he
called the Stellar Envoy during the 65 years he was in a coma.
During these hunts, we get to meet some quite
colorful characters, such as a beautician who had once been a Rebel
and a judge of an intergalactic pet show. We also learn why the
Falcon was indeed seen cruising into Coruscant during Revenge of the
Sith. Readers also will discover some of the many roles the Falcon
has had in its 100 plus year lifespan.
This book is basically set to be an enjoyable romp
through time for the Solos after the devastation they endured during
the "Legacy of the Jedi" series. But it is flawed since it is so
enjoyable that the few instances of danger seem awkward. For rabid
readers, there are some humorous passages and some great nods to
Brian Daly's original Han Solo adventure books, but even with the
mystery of what the treasure might wield there is still no sense of
urgency to make you want to actually finish reading it. I did find
some of the stories from the Falcon's previous owners quite
enjoyable, and Han's jealousy and ego over his ship and his
adventures true to character, but there was no pull to make me want
to read everyday just to see what happens next.
